Applying ABA Strategies to Support Potty Training
FREE FOR MEMBERS (view member event)
Join us for an insightful 1-hour live virtual CE presentation on Applying ABA Strategies to Support Potty Training through contemporary, assent-based frameworks. Traditional pediatric toilet training in ABA has often relied on compliance-heavy procedures, massed sitting schedules, and escape extinction, which risk creating bathroom aversion and conditioned stress responses.
This workshop introduces the Assent-Based Continence Framework (ABCF), synthesizing respondent pairing, interoceptive awareness, and trauma-informed care with BACB ethical principles. Attendees will learn practical strategies for transitioning from compliance to assent, recognizing subtle signs of dissent, utilizing visual and AAC supports, and structuring a 3-phased implementation model.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Synthesize Conceptual Differences: Compare traditional compliance-based toileting models with contemporary assent-based frameworks in plain, clinical terms.Analyze Trauma-Informed Mechanics: Evaluate how respondent pairing and interoception reduce autonomic stress and prevent conditioned fear in pediatric toileting.
- Analyze Trauma-Informed Mechanics: Evaluate how respondent pairing and interoception reduce autonomic stress and prevent conditioned fear in pediatric toileting.
- Evaluate Ethical Alignment: Align continuous assent monitoring, autonomy checks, and dissent honoring with BACB Ethics Code Standards 2.01, 2.09, 2.11, 2.12, 2.14, and 2.15.
- Formulate Multi-Phased Protocol: Structure a 3-phased assent model incorporating visual supports, functional AAC mands, and caregiver BST
Target Audience: Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs), Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts (BCaBAs), Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs), clinical supervisors, and allied health professionals
Purpose: Equip behavior analysts with ethical, trauma-informed, and practical ABA tools to teach continence while prioritizing client autonomy, dignity, and bodily agency.
Activities: Live lecture, and Q&A.
