Board service at BABA is an opportunity to help steward Black scholarship, practice, and community infrastructure in behavior analysis. Who We’re Looking For

We are seeking individuals who are aligned with BABA’s mission and prepared to engage in consistent, thoughtful service.

Core qualities include:

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Willingness to engage in governance, planning, and problem-solving
  • Nonprofit or board leadership

Time Commitment & Expectations

Board service requires consistency. While workloads vary by role, expectations generally include:

  • Term length: 3-4 years, varies based on position
  • Meetings: Bi-Weekly board meetings and committee meetings as assigned
  • Estimated time commitment: Approximately 10 hours per month
  • Peak activity periods: Convention planning and strategic initiatives

Current Open Positions:

  • Advocacy Chair
    • Oversees advocacy efforts by monitoring policy developments and advancing ethical, compliant strategies that support the organization’s mission.
  • CEU Chair
    • Ensures the development, review, and compliance of continuing education offerings in alignment with applicable accrediting standards.
  • Conference Chair
    • Leads the planning and execution of the organization’s conferences in collaboration with committees, partners, and key stakeholders.
  • Historian
    • Preserves and documents the organization’s history, milestones, and institutional memory, ensuring accurate archival records and continuity across leadership transitions.
  • Information Technology Chair
    • Oversees the organization’s technology systems and digital infrastructure to support operations, data security, accessibility, and member engagement.
  • Outreach Chair
    • Leads outreach efforts to expand awareness, engagement, and participation across members, communities, and aligned networks, with a focus on access and relationship-building.
  • Partnerships Chair
    • Develops and manages strategic partnerships with organizations, institutions, and community stakeholders to advance BABA’s mission, programs, and long-term sustainability.
  • Parliamentarian
    • Advises the Board and leadership on bylaws and parliamentary procedure to ensure fair, orderly, and compliant meetings and decision-making processes.
  • Research Chair
    • Supports and advances research initiatives aligned with the organization’s mission, including scholarship development, dissemination, and research partnerships.
  • Secretary
    • Maintains accurate records, meeting minutes, and official organizational documents in accordance with governance and compliance requirements.
  • Sponsorship Chair
    • Develops and manages relationships with sponsors to secure financial and in-kind support for organizational programs, initiatives, and events.
  • State Initiatives Chair
    • Leads and coordinates state-level programs, partnerships, and initiatives aligned with the organization’s mission and strategic goals.
  • Study Group Chair
    • Coordinates educational study groups and learning communities to support professional development, collective learning, and member engagement.
  • Volunteer Chair
    • Recruits, organizes, and supports volunteers to effectively advance the organization’s programs and initiatives, including conference and event support.

  • Free BABA Membership
  • Conference Registration Discount: 100%
  • Conference-Related Activities Discount: 100%
  • Conference Recognition
  • All members of the Executive Board will be recognized during the conference
  • Other discounts will be provided to Executive Board Members occasionally, for specific BABA-related events.
    • The percentage of this discount will range from 5% to 100%.
    • An agreed upon percentage will be discussed amongst the Executive Board and voted on based on the specific event and Executive Board Member participation.
  • All Executive Board Members are allowed to utilize the property of BABA for the use of fulfilling their roles on the Executive Board only and to promote BABA. BABA will provide these items and can be used while the Board Member is active in their role. However, some items will be provided as a gift on behalf of BABA.
    • Any item provided as a gift means the sole owner of that item is the recipient and BABA does not expect this item in return when the Board Member is inactive. Examples of gifts:
      • BABA T-Shirts, pens, mugs, etc.
      • Gift bags and any items provided in the gift bag
      • Gift cards
  • Additional benefits should be included for top/outstanding performance (i.e., highest fundraising amount, etc). Additional benefits will be provided based on available funds and approval. A checklist will be completed on an annual basis for each Board Member and those Board Members will be provided a bonus based on performance.

  3. Applicants will be contacted for interview or provided a determination based on application
  4. Final placements are made based on organizational needs and fit

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a BCBA or BCaBA to serve? Not for every role. We welcome clinicians, researchers, administrators, students, and community members whose skills align with board needs.

Is board service paid? Board roles are volunteer positions.

What if I’m not sure which role fits me best? You may indicate openness to placement based on organizational needs, however a work sample is still required, so we suggest you identify one you may potentially be skilled for.

How long does the review process take? Review timelines vary and works on a rolling basis. Applicants will be contacted once materials are reviewed and voted on by our board.
