This presentation examines how behavior analytic principles can be applied to address the systemic and interpersonal marginalization experienced by LGBTQIA+ individuals within the Black community. Using an intersectional framework, the session explores how anti-Blackness, ableism, and heteronormativity are reinforced through rule-governed behavior, punishment contingencies, and a lack of affirming environmental support. These intersecting systems of oppression often manifest within Black spaces that unintentionally replicate dominant cultural values, resulting in the exclusion or silencing of multiple marginalized Black identities.

Participants will review how learning histories, motivating operations, and reinforcement systems contribute to behaviors that uphold or disrupt oppression. Presenters will highlight real-world examples of harm and healing for Black LGBTQIA+ individuals within applied and community contexts. Attendees will be introduced to culturally responsive strategies grounded in behavior analysis, including the use of interdependent group contingencies, culturally sustaining reinforcement, and community-based stimulus control to support inclusive behavior change. Attendees will be guided through self-reflection exercises to examine their own histories of behavior shaped by systemic contingencies, and will leave with actionable tools to foster affirming, behaviorally aligned allyship within their professional and communal spaces.

This presentation is appropriate for behavior analysts, supervisors, educators, and other practitioners committed to equity, cultural humility, and the ethical obligation to “do no harm.” By integrating cultural responsiveness with behavioral science, we can begin to shape environments where all Black lives, including LGBTQIA+ lives, are fully valued and sustained.
